Australia began day 2 with an overnight score of 123/9 and added nine more runs before losing their last wicket. England then started their second innings with a lead of 40 runs, but their batters failed to utilize the platform set by their bowling unit. Australian pace trio of Mitchell Starc (3/55), Scott Boland (4/33), and Brendan Doggett (3/51) put on a magnificent effort to bundle out England for 164.

In a chase of 205, Travis Head walked out to open the innings for Australia and powered them to the target with a sensational knock of 123 (83). He received able support from Marnus Labuschagne (51) as the hosts reached 205/2 in 28.2 overs to take a lead in the five-match series.

"That innings from Travis Head was incredible"- Australia captain Steve Smith after win vs England in 1st Test

"That innings from Travis Head was incredible. Even when he shanked it he seemed to hit the gaps. One of those days when if you're on, you're on. About Tea time when we ran off (laughs). We were thinking of a few discussions and we weren't happy with how it went in the first innings. Travis said he wanted to do it and we said go on."

He added:

"Nathan Lyon was one of the guys but I think we made the right decision in the end. Right up there with the best knocks I've seen from anyone. The wicket was almost at its best to bat at the end there but the way he went about his business, played some shots early and then when they went to the short plan, he found the gaps. I thought Marnus did a wonderful job at the other end too, took it on."

The second Ashes Test will commence on December 4 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
