In a shocking development, assets worth INR 11.14 crore belonging to Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina were attached in a money laundering probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday, November 6. As reported by the Times of India, Dhawan and Raina's aforementioned assets will be part of the investigation by the ED for their potential connection to the betting platform 1xBet.
1xBet has been accused of cheating users and evading large sums of taxes. While Raina was interrogated for over eight hours in the case for his promotional activities with the platform, Dhawan has yet to appear before the ED. The latter's response will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
This development is a part of a wider crackdown by the Indian government against illegal betting apps.
Dhawan, who flourished as an opener, played 167 ODIs, 34 Tests and 68 T20Is for India, last appearing for the Men in Blue in an ODI in 2022 before calling it a day. Raina, also a left-handed batter, appeared in 226 ODIs, 18 Tests and 78 T20Is for the country, last playing in the 50-over format against England in July 2018.
