Dewald Brevis took a spectacular catch to dismiss Ruturaj Gaikwad cheaply in the first ODI between India and South Africa at JSCA Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30. With the catch, he helped the Proteas remove Gaikwad for 8 off 14 as the Men in Blue lost their third wicket for 183.
The dismissal came in the 27th over of India’s innings. Ottneil Baartman bowled a fuller length delivery, and Gaikwad went towards the cover for a cracking short, but failed to keep the ball down. Brevis leaped in the air as he dived onto the ground to pluck the catch at his knee height.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was playing his first 50-over game after 2023 but failed to make it count. The 28-year-old was recalled into the ODI squad after returning with scores of 117, 68*, and 25 for India A in the One Day series against South Africa A.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma delighted the fans with their excellent batting display against South Africa in the ODI series opener. The duo put on a 136-run partnership for the second wicket. Rohit departed after scoring 57 runs off 51 balls, including three sixes and five boundaries, lbw by Marco Jansen. Later, Brevis took a sharp catch to help the visitors bounce back into the game.
At the time of writing, the Men in Blue were 192/3 after 28 overs, with Kohli (86 off 80) and Washington Sundar (run-a-ball 7) at the crease.
Earlier in the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal was out caught behind by Quinton de Kock off Nandre Burger for 16 off 18 deliveries.
India will look to bounce back in ODIs after losing 1-2 in Australia last month. They won the last two ODI series against South Africa by identical 2-1 margins (home and away). The Proteas won their last 50-over series on Indian soil 3-2 in 2025/16.
