Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc on the South African batting unit on Day 1 of the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday, November 14. The right-arm bowler bowled a testing opening spell, and also struck after the Lunch break to put the hosts in a solid position after being put into bowl first.

Jasprit Bumrah held his end with the brand new ball in the first session while Mohammed Siraj struggled initially. The spearhead struck twice in quick succession to dismiss both openers, Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton, to leave South Africa at 62-2.

He had castled Rickelton with a delivery that moved just a hint after pitching, and extracted extra bounce by hitting the deck to dismiss Markram soon after. In the 33rd over of the innings, he trapped Tony de Zorzi in front while coming around the wicket to reduce the Proteas to 120-5.

Best Bumrah spell in a while, got it on a string atm. Executing everything he wants at will with impeccable accuracy and every ball feeling like an event. What a sight..

The ace pacer has been able to make the batters uncomfortable with this pace and angles, along with the inconsistent bounce off the surface. The South African batters have not looked at ease against him at any stage, and were largely looking to see of his spell and look to take on the other bowlers.

Bumrah, after his first two spells, has an economy of just 1.90, the least of the entire bowling unit, which also includes four maiden overs.

At the time of writing, South Africa are placed at 136-5 after 40 overs, midway through the second session.
