The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an official update regarding skipper Shubman Gill's injury on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The ace batter had walked off the field after facing only three deliveries in the first innings on Saturday, November 15.

Shubman Gill had walked out to bat at No.4 after Washington Sundar's dismissal to Simon Harmer in the 35th over. The right-handed player got off the mark in the same over in sublime fashion, with a lavish sweep shot for a boundary. However, he unfortunately injured his neck during the process, and showed discomfort straightaway.

Gill had walked off the field after a brief discussion with the physios that had stepped out to monitor the situation. Rishabh Pant had to walk in to bat on an unexpected note as the skipper's stint at the crease came to an unexpected halt.

BCCI released an official statement early in the second session, as Gill continues to be assessed behind the scenes.

"Shubman Gill has a neck spasm and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. A decision on his participation today will be taken as per his progress," BCCI's statement read.

Shubman Gill has faced multiple issues with his neck, particularly a stiff neck and neck spasms in the past. He was ruled out of two matches last year (the second T20I against Sri Lanka and 1st Test against New Zealand), due to a similar injury.

The hosts were placed at 79-2 when Gill left the field for treatment in the first session. However, since then, the batting has crumbled against the South African bowlers. Rishabh Pant played an entertaining cameo, before being dismissed right before the Lunch Break to leave the score at 132-4.

India's struggles continued into the second session as well, with Simon Harmer dismissing the pair of Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja in quick succession. At the time of writing, the score reads 172-6 after 55 overs, with a narrow lead of 13 runs registered so far.

With Shubman Gill not yet cleared to bat, Kuldeep Yadav has walked out to bat alongside Axar Patel. The Men in Blue only have a couple of tail-enders in Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj left in the line-up.
