The dismissal came off the fifth delivery of the Proteas’ innings. Arshdeep bowled a fuller-length ball which moved away from Rickelton outside off. The left-handed batter went for a drive but only managed a thin outside edge, and skipper KL Rahul completed formalities behind the stumps.

With the scalp, Arshdeep Singh continued his knack of picking up wickets in the power play. The 26-year-old previously bagged two wickets apiece in the first two ODIs. Meanwhile, Rickelton wasted another opportunity getting out for yet another duck in the first ODI in Ranchi. The opening batter had previously managed 1, 35, and 31* during the ODI series in England in September.

Arshdeep Singh strikes early after India opt to bowl first against South Africa in series decider

Arshdeep Singh provided the first breakthrough early after India captain KL Rahul won the toss in the third ODI, choosing to bowl first against South Africa. With that, India ended their 20-match toss losing streak.

The Men in Blue will be keen to put on a better display with the ball after South Africa chased down 359 in dew-friendly conditions in the second ODI held in Ranchi. Earlier, India had conceded 332 while defending 349 in the series opener in Ranchi. Interestingly, Prasidh Krishna has retained his place in the playing XI despite failing to deliver in the first two games, returning with figures of 1/48 (7.2 overs) and 2/85 (8.2), respectively.

At the time of writing, the tourists were 18/1 after 5.2 overs, with skipper Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock at the crease.

The Proteas are chasing their first ODI series in India since their 3-2 victory in 2015-16. On the other hand, KL Rahul will look to win back-to-back ODI series against South Africa as skipper. A win would also help India return to winning ways after losing 1-2 against Australia Down Under in October.
