India clinched a tense win in the first ODI against South Africa as they came out on top by 17 runs in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30. The Men in Blue held on in a dew-hit chase, with the Proteas coming close thanks to stellar contributions from their middle and lower-middle order.

India lost yet another toss in international cricket, with Aiden Markram electing to bowl first. The hosts reached an impressive 349/8, a score that was just above par given the expected advent of dew. South Africa came close, but the early part of the chase meant that they were always behind the game.

On that note, here are India's player ratings from the first ODI against South Africa.

Yashasvi Jaiswal: 4.5/10

Jaiswal started positively, but his troubles against left-arm pace continued in Ranchi. The left-hander needs to make some technical adjustments to counter the likes of Marco Jansen and Nandre Burger.

Rohit Sharma: 7.5/10

Rohit was handed a reprieve by Tony de Zorzi. He capitalized on it to an extent and made an impressive half-century, while the ball that dismissed him kept low in rather unlucky fashion.

Virat Kohli: 9.5/10

Kohli was in his element at one of his favorite home venues. The superstar batter seemed settled right from the start and attacked the South African pacers in the powerplay. His trademark ODI batting tempo continued through the innings, and he even unfurled a few brilliant hits over the fence. It was a special, special knock.

Ruturaj Gaikwad: 3/10

Gaikwad, batting at No. 4, was rather unlucky to see Dewald Brevis pluck a stunner at backward point. However, it was a delivery that needed to be put away, and the Indian batter won't get many such opportunities.

KL Rahul: 7.5/10

Rahul seemed to be really struggling out in the middle, but he managed to get a few away to the boundary. He was active behind the stumps and held on to four catches, while his captaincy was decent.

Ravindra Jadeja: 6/10

Jadeja played an important cameo to take India close to the 350-mark. But he wasn't at his best with the ball, even before the ball started to skid on. The left-arm spinner finished with India's highest economy rate on the night.

Washington Sundar: 4/10

Sundar couldn't make an impact at No. 5, and it didn't seem like he knew what to do out in the middle. His three overs went for 18 runs.

Ad

Prasidh Krishna: 6.5/10

Prasidh bowled very well for most of his spell and was a touch unfortunate to not finish with better rewards. He took the final wicket of the chase in the last over.

Kuldeep Yadav: 8.5/10

Kuldeep was one of India's star men in Ranchi as he used his variations to great effect. With four important wickets, including a two-wicket over that nearly sealed the game for the Men in Blue, he led the way in the bowling department.

Harshit Rana: 9/10

Rana turned in one of his best performances in an India shirt, picking up two wickets in the powerplay to help his team get off to a flying start in the chase. He used his cutters and bouncers well, proving hard to get away even in the later stages of the second innings.

Arshdeep Singh: 7/10

Arshdeep got some movement up front in a threatening powerplay spell that saw him dismiss Aiden Markram. The left-arm seamer picked up another wicket late in the piece and used his yorkers and slower balls smartly.
