Dewald Brevis lit up the show with his power-packed batting display in the second ODI between India and South Africa in Raipur on Wednesday, December 3. The right-handed batter slammed his maiden half-century, smashing 54 runs off just 34 deliveries at a strike rate of 158.82, including five sixes and one four.
During his knock, Brevis shared a crucial 92-run partnership with Matthew Breetzke for the fourth wicket. His exploits with the bat helped the Proteas keep the required run rate under control before Corbin Bosch provided the finishing touches in a four-wicket win to level the series 1-1. The tourists chased down the joint-highest target (359) against India in the format.
Brevis was equally impressive in the series opener in Ranchi, scoring 37 off 28 balls with the help of three sixes and two fours. Touted as the Baby AB (after famous Proteas cricketer AB de Villiers), the 22-year-old will now look to deliver in the series decider in Vizag as South Africa search for their first series win in India since their 3-2 victory during the 2015/16 tour.
In this article, we’ll compare Dewald Brevis’ record with Rohit Sharma after 8 ODIs. Take a look:
Most Runs
Dewald Brevis made his debut against Australia in August, failing to make an impact with the bat. He departed for just six runs. Since then, the right-handed batter has amassed 201 runs in eight ODIs.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma wasn’t required to bat on his ODI debut against Ireland in 2007. Back then, he played as a middle-order batter like Brevis. The Mumbai batter scored 199 runs in his first eight ODIs.
Averages and Strike Rates
Dewald Brevis averages 28.71 in his ODI career. However, he enjoys a scintillating strike rate of 153.43 owing to his attacking batting display.
On the contrary, Rohit Sharma had a healthy average of 39.80 in his first eight ODIs. He had a strike rate of 81.55, which was considered decent during his era.
Most 50s
Dewald Brevis has managed only one half-century after eight matches. As mentioned above, he slammed his career-best of 54 against the Men in Blue in the ongoing 50-over series.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma slammed two fifties in his first eight ODIs. He scored his career-best against Sri Lanka, hitting an unbeaten 70 against Sri Lanka in 2008.
Runs in Winning Causes
Dewald Brevis has won five out of his eight ODIs with the Proteas. In these games, the youngster amassed 109 runs in five innings at an average of 27.25 and a strike rate of 173.01.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma won two out of his first eight ODIs with Team India. The swashbuckling batter scored an unbeaten 39 in his only innings against Australia in 2008.
Overall, Rohit is one of the legends of the 50-over format, with 11441 runs in 278 matches (270 innings), including 33 tons and 60 half-centuries. Brevis has his entire career in front of him to match or eclipse the former India skipper’s run tally.
