Superstar batter Virat Kohli smashed a scintillating hundred in the first ODI between India and South Africa on Sunday, November 30, in Ranchi. The hosts posted a solid total of 349/8 from their 50 overs after batting first.
Virat Kohli led the charge with a magnificent hundred. He walked in to bat in the fourth over and made his intentions clear from the word go. Kohli displayed an aggressive approach as he took the attack to the South African bowlers.
The 37-year-old smashed 135 runs off just 120 balls at a strike-rate of 112.5. His blistering knock included 11 fours and seven maximums. Having scored an unbeaten 73 in the previous ODI against Australia, he carried on from where he left off.
That said, here are the five records/milestones made by Virat Kohli during his brilliant hundred against South Africa in Ranchi.
#5 Joint-most 50-plus scores for an Indian against South Africa
Virat Kohli's century was his 25th fifty-plus score against South Africa across all formats combined. With that, he equalled the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record to become the Indian batter with the joint-most fifty-plus scores against the Proteas. Tendulkar also struck 25 fifty-plus scores against South Africa.
Kohli had 24 fifty-plus scores against them before the first ODI in Ranchi. Rahul Dravid is second on the list with 21 fifty-plus scores, followed by Sourav Ganguly with 18.
#4 Fourth batter with 100 50-plus scores across all formats
Virat Kohli became only the fourth batter with 100 fifty-plus scores across all formats in international cricket. He had 99 fifty-plus scores before the first ODI against South Africa. Kohli joined an elite list of batters to have notched up 100 fifty-plus scores across all formats.
Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 112 fifty-plus scores, followed by Ricky Ponting (106 fifty-plus scores) and Jacques Kallis (104 fifty-plus scores).
#3 Most ODI hundreds against South Africa
Virat Kohli's 52nd ODI hundred was his sixth in the format against South Africa in 30 innings. He has three tons against the Proteas in South Africa and three at home. Kohli overtook Sachin Tendulkar and David Warner for the most ODI hundreds against South Africa.
The record was previously jointly held by Tendulkar and Warner, who scored five ODI hundreds each against the Proteas.
#2 Second-most runs in IND vs SA ODIs
Virat Kohli's 135-run knock took his tally to 1639 runs in ODIs between India and South Africa. These runs have come in 30 innings at an average of 68.29 with six hundreds and eight half-centuries. Kohli overtook Jacques Kallis to become the batter with the second-most runs in ODIs between India and South Africa.
Kallis made 1535 runs in 34 innings at an average of 61.40 with two hundreds and 11 half-centuries. Sachin Tendulkar is at the top of this list with 2001 runs in 57 innings at an average of 35.73 with five tons and eight half-centuries.
#1 Most hundreds in a single format
As mentioned earlier, Virat Kohli's ton was his 52nd in ODIs. He broke another Sachin Tendulkar record with this brilliant century. He surpassed Tendulkar for the most hundreds in a single format.
Tendulkar ended his international career with 51 Test tons, which were the most by a batter in the format. However, with 52 ODI hundreds, Kohli now holds the record for the most tons in a single format. No batter has more hundreds than Tendulkar in a single format previously.
