Ace India batter Virat Kohli continued his rich vein of form, scoring yet another century, his 53rd in the 50-over format, in the second ODI of the three-match series against South Africa. The match is being played on Wednesday, December 3, at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Raipur.
The right-handed batter scored a brilliant 102 off 93 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes, with strong support from Ruturaj Gaikwad, who smashed his maiden century, scoring 105 off 83 balls, as the Men in Blue finished their 50 overs at 358/5.
Meanwhile, this was Kohli’s second consecutive century, having also scored a brilliant 135 off 120 balls in the first game in Ranchi, which India won by 17 runs. With another hundred in Raipur, Kohli extended his record of scoring back-to-back hundreds in ODIs to 11 times. On that note, here is a look at five other Indian players who have scored consecutive hundreds in ODI history.
#1 Shubman Gill
India ODI skipper Shubman Gill has recorded back-to-back centuries in ODIs on two separate occasions. In 2023, on January 15, during the final match of the three-game series against Sri Lanka, the opening batter scored 116 off 97 balls at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
Just three days later, on January 18, in the first game of the three match series against New Zealand, he notched his maiden double century, making 208 off 149 balls at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Earlier this year (2025), on February 12, he scored 112 off 102 in the final game of the three-match series against England at Narendra Modi Stadium. Later that month, on February 20, during India’s opening game of the 2025 Champions Trophy against Bangladesh in Dubai, he remained unbeaten on 101 off 129, marking the second time in his career he hit back-to-back centuries.
#2 Shreyas Iyer
Next is India’s ODI vice-captain, Shreyas Iyer. The Mumbai batter achieved this milestone during the 2023 ODI World Cup. In India’s final league-stage match against the Netherlands, Iyer scored an unbeaten 128 off 94 balls at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
In the following game, the semi-final against New Zealand at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, he scored yet another century, making a stunning 105 off 70 balls, which included four fours and eight sixes.
#3 VVS Laxman
Former India batter VVS Laxman also features on the list. The right-hander achieved this milestone during the 2004 tri-series involving Australia and Zimbabwe. On January 22, 2004, he scored an unbeaten 106 off 130 balls at the Sydney Cricket Ground, though India lost the match.
In India’s next game against Zimbabwe on January 24 in Adelaide, Laxman shone again, making 131 off 138 balls, including 13 fours and one six, as the Men in Blue secured a three-run victory.

Former India opener and current head coach Gautam Gambhir also recorded back-to-back centuries in the 50-over format in 2010. He achieved this during the five-match home series against New Zealand, in which he also served as captain as India whitewashed the Kiwis.
In the second match of the series on December 1 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Gambhir scored an unbeaten 138 off 116 balls. In the following game on December 4 in Vadodara, he continued his fine form, making another century with 126 not out off 117 balls.
