In what was another tough day for India in the ongoing second Test against South Africa, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was among the records set during play on day four. The Proteas set India a massive target of 549 runs in the final innings.
South Africa began day four, resuming their second innings on 26/0. They got to 260/5 from 78/3 overs before declaring the innings. Tristan Stubbs fell short of a well-deserved hundred, being dismissed on 94. Ravindra Jadeja bagged four out of the five wickets.
The visitors got India to bat towards the end of the day and were successful in picking up a couple of wickets as well. India lost both openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) and KL Rahul (6), in quick succession. The hosts ended the day on 27/2 in 15.5 overs, needing 522 more runs to win.
Heading into the final day, South Africa will fancy their chances of winning the Test. For the hosts, they will have to put up a fight to save the game with eight wickets remaining.
On that note, let us take a look at four records/milestones made on Day 4 of the second Test between India and South Africa.
#4 Fourth 50-plus opening stand for South Africa in both innings of a Test against India
South African openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton have done a solid job for the team in the second Test. In the first innings, they added an 82-run partnership in 26.5 overs. When they batted again, their partnership once again crossed the 50-run mark on the fourth day. They added 59 runs at the top.
This was only the fourth instance where an opening pair put up a 50-plus stand for South Africa in both innings of a Test match against India. Herschelle Gibbs and Gary Kirsten were the first to do so at Mumbai in 2000, followed by Graeme Smith and Andre Hall at Kanpur in 2004, and Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie at Chennai in 2008.
#3 Highest target set for India in home Tests
The 549-run target set by South Africa on the fourth day was the highest target set for India in a Test match at home. The Proteas broke the record that was previously held by Australia, who had set India a mammoth target of 543 at Nagpur in 2004.
South Africa bettered their own record, as they appear once again on this list with the third-highest target (467) that they had set at Kolkata in 1996. Australia had set a 457-run target at Bengaluru in 2004, which is the fourth-highest, followed by a 452-run target set by England at Chennai in 1934, which is the fifth-highest.
#2 Only second left-arm spinner with 50-plus Test wickets against South Africa
Ravindra Jadeja impressed with the ball on the fourth day. He bagged four wickets, returning figures of 4/62 in 28.3 overs. His dismissals included Rickelton, Markram, Stubbs, and Tony de Zorzi.
Ravindra Jadeja became only the second left-arm spinner to pick 50-plus wickets against South Africa in Tests. Former England cricketer Colin Blythe was the first and only one to have previously achieved this feat with 59 scalps between 1906 and 1910.
#1 Ravindra Jadeja became the fifth Indian bowler with 50-plus Test wickets against South Africa
Ravindra Jadeja took his tally to 52 Test wickets against South Africa in 11 matches and 19 innings at an average of 19.63. Ravindra Jadeja joined an elite list, becoming only the fifth Indian bowler with 50-plus Test wickets against South Africa.
Anil Kumble is at the top with 84 scalps at an average of 31.79. Javagal Srinath, the only pacer on the list, is second with 64 wickets at an average of 24.48. Harbhajan Singh follows with 60 scalps at an average of 38.40, while Ravichandran Ashwin is fourth with 57 wickets at an average of 22.28.
