West Indian all-rounder Justin Greaves shifted the attention of the cricketing world from the engrossing second Ashes Test and the upcoming ODI series decider between India and South Africa to himself with a heroic effort in the first Test against New Zealand in Christchurch. The 31-year-old has been one of the most promising cricketers emerging from the West Indies over the last two years.

However, his stocks worldwide skyrocketed this morning, thanks to an all-time great rearguard auction to help the West Indies pull off a seemingly improbable draw.

Walking into bat at 72/4 with over a day and a half left to survive or chase down 531, Greaves scored an incredible 388-ball 202*. The right-hander defied the Kiwi attack in their home conditions against all odds, helping his side pull off a miraculous final day draw.

His heroics have also come at a time when IPL franchises are searching for a cricketer of this ilk in the upcoming mini auction in 10 days. While Greaves has never played in the IPL, his recent performances, including the latest double-century under pressure, are likely to attract bids for the all-rounder in the auction.

On that note, let us look at three teams that should target Justin Greaves in the IPL 2026 auction.

#1 Delhi Capitals

The Delhi Capitals (DC) were among the best bowling sides in the 2025 IPL season, thanks to an admirable collection of pacers and spinners. However, their batting, which appeared dangerous on paper, struggled to live up to expectations.

It resulted in the franchise letting go of several overseas batting stars, Donovan Ferreira (traded to RR), Faf du Plessis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Sediqullah Atal. While the acquisition of Nitish Rana bolsters their batting arsenal, Justin Greaves' addition at the auction would be ideal for them on two fronts.

DC would add an in-form overseas batter to their roster, with the batter also offering some much-needed versatility. The 31-year-old has thrived in the lower middle order in Tests, but in ODIs, he has routinely batted across positions, from opening to No.9.

Justin Greaves boasts an excellent average of 51 at a strike rate of 144.68 in six ODI innings at No. 6. The numbers are similar at No. 7, with an average of 43.50 and a strike rate of almost 96 in six innings.

Yet, when it comes to T20s, Greaves' best performances have come at the top of the order. In his latest Caribbean Premier League (CPL) appearance last year, Justin Greaves batted in the top three in all eight innings, averaging 33 at a strike rate of over 125.

Such versatility should bode well for a DC unit potentially overhauling their batting lineup in IPL 2026.

#2 KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made several noteworthy releases ahead of the auction, following their disappointing IPL 2025 season. In Andre Russell, Anrich Nortje, Moeen Ali, Quinton de Kock, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Spencer Johnson, the three-time champions released several overseas stars.

KKR's main search in the auction is for a potential overseas opener and a middle to lower middle-order all-rounder. Justin Greaves almost single-handedly fits both categories, even if unproven at the IPL level.

The 31-year-old has achieved success at the top of the order in the CPL, while also producing excellent numbers for the national side in the lower middle-order in Tests and ODIs. Furthermore, Justin Greaves offers much value with the ball, given his impressive results in international cricket this year.

His right-arm medium-pace bowling has fetched him 18 wickets across formats this year.

With the presence of West Indian legends, Andre Russell and Dwayne Bravo, in the support staff, KKR could be the perfect destination for Greaves and vice versa.

#3 GT

Gujarat Titans (GT) were among the few teams last season with several strong suits but one glaring area of weakness. Despite boasting an all-star top three and an incredible bowling attack, GT struggled with the lack of a formidable middle-order.

Furthermore, the side also has a bare cupboard when it comes to pace-bowling all-rounders, having released Dasun Shanaka, Gerald Coetzee, and Karim Janat before the auction. The franchise also traded their primary No.4 from last season, Sherfane Rutherford, to the Mumbai Indians (MI).

Greaves could be the ideal replacement at that position or act as the glue in the lower middle-order all-rounder between the specialist batters and bowlers. While Glenn Phillips' return should bolster the batting all-rounder spot, conditions across India could warrant having an all-rounder with pace-bowling skills like Justin Greaves.
