India clinched a 17-run win in the first ODI against South Africa on Sunday, November 30. An excitable crowd at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi bore witness to an impressive all-round performance from the hosts.
On the whole, it was a solid display after being asked to bat first in conditions that were obviously more conducive towards chasing. South Africa came close after dew set in during the chase, but the Men in Blue had ensured that they had enough on the board to overcome that change.
However, a couple of key names failed to deliver. On that note, here are two Indian players who flopped and one who starred in the first ODI against South Africa.
#3 Flop - Ruturaj Gaikwad

Batting at No. 4 for the first time in his short ODI career, Ruturaj Gaikwad fell cheaply. He attempted to cut one off Ottneil Baartman through backward point, where Dewald Brevis leapt to his right to pluck a one-handed blinder.
Gaikwad can't be faulted for the choice of shot, but his execution definitely wasn't on point. The right-hander won't get too many opportunities to nail down a spot in the squad and needs to capitalize on periods of time where he is in prolific run-scoring form.
#2 Star - Virat Kohli

The first innings was only about one man. Virat Kohli, who simply adores batting in Ranchi, came up with an all-time great knock. The superstar batter was in his element right from the outset and showed some new attacking gears during his three-figure knock.
Kohli wasn't afraid to take the aerial route in the first ODI, striking as many as seven sixes. His pristine strike rotation and relentless running between the wickets were present as well, ensuring that India reached an above-par total even without a deep batting lineup.
#1 Flop - Yashasvi Jaiswal

However, another solid batter failed to deliver in Ranchi. Opening the batting instead of Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal managed just 18 runs before being caught behind off Nandre Burger.
Jaiswal has had some issues against left-arm pacers, particularly those who can generate away movement and bounce. It's a pattern of dismissal that has become rather common these days, and the left-hander will want to sort out that technical issue at the earliest.
