“We’re 3-6,” “We just lost to a basketball team by 100”: Fans react as Florida’s Eugene Wilson III undergoes surgery ahead of showdown vs. Ole Miss

Florida wideout Eugene Wilson III is set to undergo surgery for his ankle injury on Wednesday. Wilson, who has been one of the better-performing players for the Gators this season, is set to be sidelined for the rest of the season.

The Gators (3-6, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) will face Lane Kiffin's No. 6 Ole Miss (9-1, 5-1) in their Week 12 clash on Saturday. When On3's Pete Nakos tweeted that Wilson's season-ending injury was "brutal news," fans had some interesting reactions.

"Eh, nothing left to play for really. Id rather players get whatever procedures they need now. We all saw how DJ looked after no off-season training and battling injuries during the season," a third commented.

The Gators fired Billy Napier from his head coaching role on Oct. 19. He was fired after Florida's 23-21 win over Mississippi State that improved the Gators' record to 3-4 for the season.

Billy Gonzales, Florida's wide receivers coach, was appointed as the team's interim head coach after Napier's firing. The Gators are yet to win a game under Gonzales.

Ole Miss could pile on more misery for the Gators on Saturday.

Eugene Wilson III posted 239 yards and three touchdowns on 27 receptions for Florida this season. The wideout was one of the few bright sparks in the Gators' offense.

Wilson had a season-high 121 yards with a touchdown on nine receptions against Georgia on Nov. 1. However, he also sprained his ankle later in the game, which has forced him to miss the rest of the season.
