Quarterback John Mateer and his Oklahoma Sooners have been on a great ride ever since the 2025 season began. Coach Brent Venables’ strategy in leading the offense and defense has now put the team in contention for a playoff, although they are still 6-2.
Given they win all the upcoming matchups and manage to impress the selection committee, Oklahoma should be through.
This weekend, the Sooners will face the Tennessee Vols on the road and will hope to seal a big win over Joey Aguilar, who has been equally good throughout the season. According to college football insider Greg McElroy, Oklahoma will be a better team in this SEC blockbuster.
McElroy emphasized how athletic Mateer and his team were during the last couple of games. Even though the Ole Miss game proved to be a real challenge and they lost the game, Venables’ strategy was on point, excluding some of the second-half fumbles.
“I think this game has got a chance to become a track meet. I’m thinking it’s going to be a high-scoring affair, and I’m going to take Oklahoma,” McElroy said on Thursday’’s episode of Always College Football.

“I think they have fewer holes than Tennessee right now, and the injuries in Tennessee’s back end defensively really concern me.
“So even if the Oklahoma passing game has regressed, I think this could be the get-right recipe. As long as their offensive line can hold up, and John Mateer can hit some big plays downfield,” he added.
Oklahoma coach addresses the Tennessee challenge
This season Tennessee’s QB depth chart got significantly better with Joey Aguilar's arrival.
While skeptics raised concerns over his feasibility over Nico Iamaleava, the youngster managed to flip the script with big wins this season. His clutch moment plays and accuracy proved vital for the team's offensive run.
“Joey Aguilar has done a fantastic job. He’s helped their offense just by being incredibly efficient and explosive. He’s thrown the deep ball with great, great accuracy.
"He’s allowed them to kind of stay on schedule really through all eight games. He’s been fantastic for them,” Venables said to the reporters earlier this week.
After Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri and LSU are other opponents Oklahoma will face in consecutive weeks. What is your prediction for this weekend?
