College football insider Josh Pate has raised a big doubt on the hopes of Diego Pavia’s Vanderbilt to make the College Football Playoff. The Commodores finished the regular season 10-2, beating rival Tennessee 45-24 in their season finale last Saturday.

The team had an incredible run this fall, only losing twice in road games at Alabama and Texas. Despite their strong campaign, Pate thinks the Commodores’ chances of getting a nod from the CFP Selection Committee are not so high. He said on the latest episode of Josh Pate’s College Football Show (1:18-1:33):

“I am telling you, if you imagine nothing more than a logo switch and you look at that resume, you slap an LSU logo, or you slap a Texas logo on Vanderbilt’s resume, I have zero doubt in my mind they’re in the playoff. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it.”

Pate continued (2:25-2:40):

“You go back to July, and you tell anyone Vandy’s going 10-2, I’m asking what seed they are, not whether they’re going to make the playoff. I’m asking, are we about to see Vandy host a playoff game in Nashville? And right now, they need help to get in. Just blows my mind, man.”

Vanderbilt is one of several SEC programs with legit claims to CFP berths. Apart from clear candidates like Georgia and Alabama, Texas A&M and Ole Miss also have strong claims with 11-1 records to end the season.

Diego Pavia earns Player of the Week honor

Diego Pavia earned the AP Player of the Week honor for his role in Vanderbilt’s victory over Tennessee. The quarterback threw for 268 yards and a touchdown while rushing for another 165 yards and a score.

He has established himself as the centerpiece of Vanderbilt’s offense over the course of the past two seasons. The 23-year-old transferred to Vanderbilt from New Mexico State ahead of the 2024 season, proving himself invaluable to Clark Lea’s team.

Pavia led the Commodores to a 7-6 finish in 2024, as he threw for 2,293 yards and 20 touchdowns. He rushed for another 193 yards and eight scores to end the 2024 season. The quarterback has been making the most of his final college season, passing for 3,192 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Diego Pavia’s contribution to the Commodores’ run this season has drawn Heisman Trophy shouts from crowds, especially after Saturday’s game against Tennessee.
