Indiana Fever shooting guard Sophie Cunningham has shared her thoughts on Lane Kiffin getting booed by Ole Miss fans as he left the team. Kiffin’s switch between two conference rivals, Ole Miss and LSU, has dominated conversations around college football all week.
The new LSU coach arrived at Baton Rouge on Sunday evening after severing ties with Ole Miss, where he has coached the past six years. Fans reportedly booed the coach as he boarded the private flight leaving Oxford for Baton Rouge on Sunday. Cunningham reacted to this on her show with West Wilson, “Show Me Something.” She said (38:45 - 39:29):
“I don’t care what people say. That’s just funny to me. Like, people care so much and, like, love their sports team so much that they will, like, literally quit from their jobs and, like, get out of school just to go tell someone to f*ck off. Welcome to the Midwest.”
The WNBA star continued:
“I get it ‘cause we’re not in his shoes, and I feel like when you have a good opportunity, even if you’re in a good opportunity where you’re at, you still want to first of all get your money while you can. But if he’s wanting to rebuild and he’s really good at that, then great opportunity. But it’s just hard because you’ve already built something so great; these kids believe in you, and they rely on you. And then that’s just the tough part of coaching.
SEC Commissioner blames distorted calendar amid Lane Kiffin’s LSU move
Amid the criticism trailing Lane Kiffin’s move from Ole Miss to LSU, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has spoken out on the college football calendar. Sankey pointed out having a national signing period in December as a factor in the coaching instability haunting college programs.
He said:
“You can go find my quotes where I warned that an early signing period added in December would change the calendar and the timing of coach changes. I think now there are more factors involved, but in fact, going back to the moment where we added the December signing period, you saw earlier terminations of coaches during the season and then the need to rapidly hire a coach in late November and early December.”
One of Lane Kiffin’s early assignments at LSU is to make sense of the Tigers’ recruitment, preventing a mass loss of commitments. Multiple prospects have since withdrawn their pledges to the Tigers following Kiffin's arrival.
