Hugh Freeze was fired from his role as Auburn's football coach on Nov. 2. The Tigers announced that defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin will serve as their interim coach, likely for the rest of the season.
While Auburn searches for a permanent coach, Southeastern Conference analyst Paul Finebaum has weighed in on who could fill the role.
“The betting favorite at Auburn is Jon Sumrall, the Tulane coach who held on Friday night,” Finebaum said on “The Matt Barrie Show” on Sunday.
"It’s not the hire that wows America, but if that ends up being the case, and Matt, we are speculating, I think almost every Auburn fan that I’ve talked to would be thrilled. That job is so much better than what it’s being credited for.”
Sumrall was hired as Tulane's coach in December 2023. He led the team to a 9-5 record in his first year. This season, the Green Wave are third in the AAC with a 7-2 record, in the hunt for the conference title.
A look at Hugh Freeze's coaching record at Auburn

Auburn hired Hugh Freeze in November 2022. He compiled a 15-19 record in just under three seasons.
The Tigers posted a 6-7 record in 2023 and had a 5-7 record last season. This season, Freeze was fired after leading Auburn to a 4-5 record.
After being fired, Freeze released a statement for Auburn fans, players and staff.
"It's my fervent belief that great days are ahead for the Auburn football program," Freeze wrote in a statement on X. "Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this chapter. I love this place, and I'll carry the friendships with me always."
According to reports, Auburn will pay Freeze $15.8 million in buyout money.
