Legendary coach Nick Saban has weighed in on the ongoing debate over which program ought to make the playoff between Miami and Notre Dame. The debate has been raging all week, as both teams, at 10-2, hope for a spot in the 12-team bracket of the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame is on a 10-game winning streak after starting the season 0-2. This has formed the bulk of the argument of those favoring Notre Dame’s inclusion in the playoff ahead of the Hurricanes.

Meanwhile, the head-to-head of the teams has been the talking point for Miami supporters, referring to the Hurricanes’ 27-24 win back in September. The former Alabama coach belongs to this group, hinging his argument on Miami’s performance in that game during his analysis on College GameDay on Saturday. He said:

“Yeah, but head-to-head, I mean, look at the game. Miami was the more physical team in the game. Jeremiyah Love gained 33 yards in the game. They won on the line of scrimmage. They kicked Notre Dame’s ass in the game, alright? And that’s being totally not considered.”

Nick Saban also shared the perspective that the Fighting Irish have been in hot form. He continued:

“Now, I do agree that Notre Dame is playing very well right now. So it’s hard to not think that both of those teams should be in. And then you get into is Alabama penalized based on what happens in the championship game.”

Note how Saban slips in his former team in anticipation of their fate on Saturday.

Who else has appealed for a playoff spot apart from Nick Saban?

Before Nick Saban’s subtle appeal for Alabama, many teams had been making the case for a playoff berth since the regular season finale last week. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian first made the call following his team’s victory over in-state rival Texas A&M.

He argued that omitting the Longhorns from the playoff would be tantamount to punishing them for visiting Ohio State for a non-conference game in Week 1. He said:

“It would be a disservice to our sport if this team is not a playoff team.”

Others, like Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea, are also clamoring for their team’s trip to the playoffs. Lea decried the weekly shifting of the goalpost during his appearance on Wake Up Barstool on Friday, saying:

“It seems like every week the goalposts move and the process changes."

The final rankings for the playoff will be revealed on Dec. 7.
