LSU football head coach Lane Kiffin has taken a subtle dig at Ole Miss while celebrating a milestone in his first week at Baton Rouge. Kiffin switched from Ole Miss to LSU last Sunday in an epic move that has dominated conversations in college football all week.
The coach shared a post stating he has signed more five-star prospects in a week than he did in his six years at Ole Miss. The post, made by Tingle & Co., reads:
“Why did Lane Kiffin come to LSU? Well, he just signed more 5-stars in 5 days at LSU than he did in 6 years at Ole Miss.”
Kiffin reacted by quoting the post and writing:
“#JustDifferent @LSUfootball.”
Since Kiffin’s arrival on Sunday, two five-star recruits have signed with the Tigers. They are five-star ATH Lamar Brown and five-star defensive lineman Richard Anderson. Four-star defensive lineman Deuce Geralds also signed for Kiffin’s LSU on Friday, as the national signing period ended.
How LSU convinced Lane Kiffin away from Ole Miss
The Tigers had promised Kiffin they would be investing $25 million in the roster through NIL and revenue sharing, per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. This commitment from the program played a role in the coach’s decision to come to Baton Rouge, as he stated in his introductory press conference. He said:
“That definitely played a factor into it, because I don’t care what your systems are; without good players, they don’t work.”
The coach further pointed out that the deals offered by Ole Miss and LSU were “very similar.” However, the NIL packages differ. The difference in both programs’ recruiting incentives can be seen in how their respective recruiting classes ranked at the close of the early signing period.
While LSU’s recruiting class ranked No. 13 nationally, according to 247Sports, the Rebels ranked No. 22. Another huge factor was the decommitment of four-star prospects Corey Barber and JC Anderson as they followed Lane Kiffin to LSU.
Another layer of factor that cannot be overstated in Kiffin’s decision is the difference in the national championship-winning prospects of LSU and Ole Miss. While three of the Tigers’ past four coaches won the national title at Baton Rouge, Kiffin just led the Rebels to their first playoffs.
The mutual desire for the national title inspired the elevation clause in the coach’s deal with LSU. The clause will see him become the highest-paid coach nationally on winning the natty.
