Brian Kelly has been the talk of the town ever since LSU fired him from his coaching role on Oct. 26. While initial reports claimed that the Tigers owed Kelly $54 million in buyout money, the school has been working to lower the cost of the fees.

Amid the buyout drama, college football insider Bruce Feldman revealed some of the surprising factors that led to Kelly’s firing, including when the coach was at Notre Dame.

"Even before, when he (Kelly) was at Notre Dame, he was largely dealing with a different kind of kid, and then, he went down there, I think it was like he couldn't relate and didn't want to recruit," Feldman said on the “Ryen Russillo show” on Thursday. "That's the other big part of this. Like, you know, when I worked on Ed Orgeron's book, after 2019, when they won the national title, I distinctly remember, every five minutes, there would be a different staffer coming up to him with an iPhone and a recruiter on the other side, basically saying, 'Hey, can you talk to so and so. And he would know all about what they did in the previous game and all this. And he could BS with them.

Feldman then shared details of how Kelly would behave with recruits and his own players before adding that the former LSU coach spent more time golfing rather than at work.

"When that happened with Brian Kelly, he would say, 'Make an appointment' to the assistant coaches. You don't do that. The guy would put the kid on hold and be like, 'Wait, I got him on the phone right now. I can't wait till Thursday. You don't know how that looks.'

"One of the players, who was at starting center for him for two years, was like, 'I had no relationship with him. He didn't even try to get to know me.' And I think those things matter. You talk to people, they thought he was kind of, he cashed out there. That he would spend a lot more time golfing than he did, really, around the building."

Kelly was fired a day after LSU’s blowout loss to Texas A&M dropped the team to 5-3 on the season. Now, the issues around his buyout have made headlines.

According to reports, LSU offered to pay Brian Kelly a one-time payment of $25 million instead of his full $54 million buyout. The Tigers later offered Kelly $30 million over two payments, but he rejected those offers.

On Monday, LSU stated that it has not "formally terminated" Kelly. Instead, the Tigers are now seeking to fire Kelly "for cause" to avoid paying his full buyout, potentially.

Brian Kelly had a 34-14 record in just under four seasons at LSU. He led the Tigers to the SEC West division title in 2022.
