Ahead of the final CFP ranking, Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame received a boost to their playoff hopes with BYU’s defeat to Texas Tech on Saturday. The Red Raiders beat the Cougars on Saturday to claim the Big 12 Conference title. But in doing so, they also claimed an automatic bid as one of the highest-ranked conference champions.

With the loss weakening the Cougars’ resume, a Notre Dame fan account on X changed its profile picture to a mockup Texas Tech logo. The gesture immediately drew reactions from enraged fans on the social media platform.

Debates surrounding the playoff hopes of Marcus Freeman's Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s playoff discussions over the past week featured its position vis-à-vis teams like the Miami Hurricanes. Notre Dame and the Hurricanes finished the regular season in a similar manner, with a 10-2 record.

However, the Fighting Irish are ranked two places above the Hurricanes ahead of the final CFP rankings, generating a great deal of debate. On the one hand are analysts who believe the Hurricanes’ record against Marcus Freeman’s men should count for something.

This is the position of former Alabama head coach Nick Saban, who said on Saturday:

“Head-to-head, I mean, look at the game. Miami was the more physical team in the game. Jeremiyah Love gained 33 yards in the game. They won on the line of scrimmage. They kicked Notre Dame’s ass in the game, alright? And that’s being totally not considered.”

On the other hand are advocates for Notre Dame’s hot form, going on a 10-win streak after starting the season 0-2. Marcus Freeman made this case in an interview with Fox Sports, where he said:

“I think the ultimate question is, ‘Who’s the best team now?’ And that’s what the playoff committee wants, and I’m sure that’s what college football fans want. I think anytime you look at one single data point, it’s going to sway you one way or another.”

The final CFP ranking is set to be released on Sunday.
