Vanderbilt football head coach Clark Lea has expressed his dissatisfaction at his team’s latest College Football Playoff Rankings, calling out the CFP committee. The Commodores ranked No. 14 in the latest rankings, leaving a huge question hanging over their playoff hopes.

Lea appeared on Wake Up Barstool on Friday morning to decry what he believes is an unfair treatment of the Commodores. He alleged that the CFP rankings were constantly moving the goalpost, allowing championship-winning teams from less competitive conferences to have automatic bids. He said:

“It seems like every week the goalposts move and the process changes. Obviously, what we are living through right now is the evolution of a flawed system. We’re on the wrong side of that, and I’m frustrated by it, and I’m going to turn my attention to help change it and progress it as we go into the offseason.”

Lea continued:

“But this was kind of my thought, and in general, a 10-2 SEC team should be in the playoffs. If you look at what we’ve done, we’re undefeated at home. Our two road losses came at Alabama and at Texas, both times, we were still in in the fourth quarter, in different ways. It’s also about a team that has evolved through the year.”

Diego Pavia echoes Clark Lea’s frustration

Clark Lea is not alone in his agitation for Vanderbilt’s inclusion in the playoff this postseason. His most notable player and Heisman Trophy contender, Diego Pavia, took the appeal to the highest level possible, tagging President Donald Trump in a post.

Pavia’s post was in reaction to a call by journalist Brooks Austin to expand the CFP to 16 teams. While the Commodores, led by Lea, can attempt another playoff berth next season, this season is Pavia’s last chance at playing for the national championship.

The quarterback has become notable nationally over the past two seasons under Clark Lea’s tutelage after transferring from New Mexico State. Leading the Commodores to a 10-2 regular season finish, Pavia threw for 3,192 yards, 27 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

He also rushed for an additional 826 yards and nine scores on 152 carries. Lea made a case for Pavia playing in the playoff, saying on Wake Up Barstool:

“I will tell you, college football deserves to see Diego Pavia and this offense on the biggest stage under the brightest lights.”

The CFP committee’s selections will be announced on Dec. 7.
