James Franklin was hired as Virginia Tech's coach on Monday. Franklin joins the Hokies just a shade over a month after being fired from Penn State.
On Thursday, Penn State quarterback Drew Allar shared his thoughts on Franklin joining Virginia Tech.
“Yeah, as you guys know, I have a great relationship with Coach Franklin,” Allar said. “I probably talk to him every other day, really since we’ve both been done. I could now phrase it like that, but yeah, I’m very excited for him.
"He’s gonna do a great job at Virginia Tech. I think it’s a great spot for him, and I’m very excited to see how he does. Very happy for him and his family.”
Penn State fired Franklin after six games this season. He was dismissed after the team suffered three straight losses and was at a 3-3 record.
Allar suffered an undisclosed season-ending injury in the fourth quarter against Northwestern on Oct. 18. Franklin was fired a day after Penn State's loss to the Wildcats.
Before his injury, Allar recorded 1,100 passing yards, eight touchdowns, three interceptions and one rushing TD this season.
James Franklin won't coach Virginia Tech against Miami in Week 13

Despite being introduced as Virginia Tech's coach on Wednesday, James Franklin won't be on the sidelines for the Hokies' Week 13 clash against No. 13 Miami on Saturday. According to Miami Insider Gaby Urrutia, Virginia Tech's interim coach Philip Montgomery will handle sideline duties for the team's final home game.
Reports have claimed that Franklin will take over as Virginia Tech's coach after the 2025 regular season ends.
The Virginia Tech (3-7, 2-4 ACC) vs. Miami (8-2, 4-2 ACC) game will kick off at noon ET from Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia.
