Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant will not return to Saturday's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers due to right calf soreness, the team announced.

It is unclear which specific play Morant hurt, but it could be during a play wherein he went down hard to grab a rebound. Morant collided with Cavaliers guard Sam Merrill, who was called for a loose-ball foul. The Grizzlies star went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line after that. He was noticeably limping as he ran up and down.

Morant eventually checked out with 6:01 left in the opening quarter and immediately went to the locker room. He had seven points and two assists on Saturday.

With Ja Morant not returning, the Grizzlies are left with no available point guards. Ty Jerome (calf), Scotty Pippen Jr. (toe) and Javon Small (toe) are also out due to injuries.

Ja Morant's injury could be a factor in his future in Memphis

Ja Morant is arguably one of the most entertaining players to watch when he is healthy. However, there are concerns about his effort and desire to remain with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Following the Oct. 31 loss to the LA Lakers, Morant repeatedly told media members to direct their questions to the coaching staff. This led to the team issuing a one-game suspension to Morant, as they described his comments as "detrimental."

Morant has continued to struggle early this season. Through 11 games, he is averaging 18.9 points per game, which is the lowest mark since his rookie season in 2019-20. He is also shooting a career-low 35.2% from the field and 16.7% from 3-point range.

While there are no indications that the franchise would want to move on from Morant as of yet, it will not be surprising if they explore trades for the 26-year-old star down the line. Morant will have no shortage of suitors as he can be an explosive guard with the ability to be a strong passer.
