The Charlotte Hornets have leaned on star guard LaMelo Ball to lead them to success since drafting him at No. 3 in 2020. Ball has shown he has what it takes to be an NBA star. However, since joining the Hornets, the All-Star has not been able to lead the team to significant success.

Before he achieved his dream of being in the NBA, Ball generated so much hype among fans. He's gotten attention since high school, due to his older brother Lonzo and their father, LaVar. With his fame, there were expectations that he'd emerge as a potential star.

He's achieved that, but many believe that he's leading his team nowhere. On Friday, ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps released an article talking about the stars they are monitoring closely. Regarding Ball, the two insiders disclosed that anonymous NBA executives have doubts about his effort.

"He still doesn't know who he is," a Western Conference scout said. "But I think you can justify buying into the talent."

Another criticism of him is his availability. Bontemps wrote that Ball has only appeared in 58.1% of Charlotte's games since he was drafted. The 6-foot-7 guard has struggled with being healthy.

"Yes, he's talented, but he doesn't take basketball seriously enough," another West scout said. "It's hard to build a winner with him because of how he plays, and the liberties he takes for himself when he plays."

The lack of being in the playoffs and his injuries have affected his reputation as a star. This season, LaMelo Ball led his team to a 3-5 start, averaging 23.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 9.8 assists.

Ball is expected to be healthy this season and lead the Hornets to their first playoff appearance since 2016.

The trade market isn't strong enough for LaMelo Ball and two other NBA stars

LaMelo Ball hasn't led the Hornets to any sort of success, and that has damaged his trade value. But he's still an All-Star. Unfortunately for the former Chino Hills superstar, there isn't much buzz around him at the trade market.

Aside from Ball, New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson is also dealing with this problem. Recent conditioning and injury issues have affected his trade value.

“To be honest, their move might be a win-now trade, not a Zion trade,” a rival executive said. “His trade value isn’t there and they are facing some pressure to win.”

Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies is also a star who doesn't have a lot going on in the trade market. There have been recent rumors about a potential trade due to his rift with the team. But past off-court concerns have already hurt his value even before the new problem emerged.

“He sells shoes, he sells tickets, and he wants to play in Memphis when no one wants to,” a Western Conference assistant coach said. “So it makes for a really, really difficult situation.”

LaMelo Ball and the other two stars haven't lived up to the hype. There is no guarantee that other teams would be interested in them, even though their time with their current teams may be coming to an end.
