The Dallas Mavericks reportedly intend to build around Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 pick of the 2025 NBA draft, and nine-time All-Star Kyrie Irving.NBA insider Brett Siegel said on Friday that the Mavericks plan to have the duo of Irving and Flagg as the franchise cornerstones. Per Spotrac, Flagg is on a four-year, $62 million rookie-scale deal, while Irving is under contract for two more seasons, including a 2027-28 player option."Flagg is the player this organization views as its cornerstone for many years to come," Siegel wrote. "Regarding Irving, the continued belief around the NBA is that the former NBA champion guard not only wants to remain in Dallas, but that the organization wants to build around him and Flagg, even after Kyrie's ACL injury."Mavericks reporter and insider Joey Mistretta doubled down on Siegel's report, saying that Dallas does not intend to move Irving. The one-time NBA champion is expected to be out for the majority, if not all, of this season due to his ACL recovery."Can confirm this," Mistretta tweeted. "I've heard similar thoughts. Mavericks don't want to move on from Kyrie Irving yet, it seems."Siegel's report comes as rumors about Dallas star Anthony Davis intensify. While the Mavericks have not indicated their willingness to trade Davis, Siegel quoted league sources in saying that the team will gauge the trade market for him.Through 18 games, Flagg is averaging 15.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists on 45.1% shooting. While the 6-foot-9 star has struggled shooting, he has shown flashes of his potential.Cooper Flagg downplays upcoming match vs. former Mavericks star Luka Doncic as 'just another game'The Dallas Mavericks have a much-anticipated clash against their former franchise star, Luka Doncic, and the LA Lakers on Friday. Cooper Flagg, whom Dallas now intends to be the franchise cornerstone, was asked about the upcoming NBA Cup game."I would say to me, it's another game," Flagg said on Tuesday. "I know there's gonna be a lot of other things that go into that game and through a lot of these guys' mindsets and whatnot. For me, it's just another game. I'm trying to survive day by day, take everything one day at a time, one game at at time. Right now, we're just trying to find ways to win."Coming into Friday, LA is 13-4 and has won five straight games. On the other hand, Dallas is tied for the Western Conference's second-worst record at 5-14.However, Anthony Davis, who has been sidelined for a month with a left calf strain, will reportedly make his return for Dallas on Friday. The game will also mark Davis' first game against the Lakers in LA since the blockbuster trade in February.
