While Ohtani won his fourth MVP title this year, the most in MLB history after Barry Bonds' seven, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes he could be in contention for the Cy Young award next season.

However, Roberts also said that Ohtani's Dodgers teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto might have a say in the top pitching prize.

"Paul Skenes is the bigger problem."

"I'd take Yamamoto over Ohtani on the mound any day. Ohtani is overrated as a pitcher is my opinion. Great #2 but not an ace."

"Yama will get in his way, no doubt. This could be fun!!"

"Is he gonna let Sho pitch longer?"

"Awwww man. I thought the Dodgers were going to be smart with Ohtani and only use him in the second half of seasons. He only has about 500 to 600 innings left in his arm max. Why waste those innings inApril, May and early June? The formula they used last year was perfect."

Ohtani returned to pitching for the first time last season since his Tommy John surgery in 2023. The two-way phenom was eased into the starting role by Dave Roberts. However, the four-time MVP is expected to play a bigger role in the rotation next season.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Shohei Ohtani for exceeding expectations on his pitching return last season

Dodger manager Dave Roberts is impressed by how quickly Shohei Ohtani got into his groove despite not pitching for more than a year.

“I think this year, he pitched better than I expected, given [he was] coming off surgery. And this offseason, he’s going to have a regular offseason. I think he absolutely could win a Cy Young, but I think Yamamoto is going to have something to say about it too.”

Meanwhile, fellow Japanese star Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who had a strong regular season, took his game up a level in the postseason and played a crucial role in their consecutive World Series titles. He was named the World Series MVP for his historic performances.
