The New York Yankees lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in pursuit of free agent reliever Edwin Diaz. The former Mets closer signed with the Dodgers on a three-year, $69 million deal.
The Yankees, who are worth $8.2 billion (via Forbes). won their last World Series in 2009. They came close to ending the drought last year, but they failed against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are building quite the dynasty.
The Yankees are a 27-time World Series champion, but lately they have been a shadow of their predecessors. One former Yankees outfielder broke down on what's going wrong with the team.
On Thursday, former outfielder Clint Frazier thinks "the Yankees need to spend like the Yankees again." He mentioned the Yankees' current owner, Hal Steinbrenner, constantly being reminded of his late father, George Steinbrenner, who played a big role in making Yankees a force to be reckoned with. He shared his perspective on what the Yankees should have done in case before Diaz signed with the already star-studded Dodgers.
"I think that the Yankees of the past are the modern-day Los Angeles Dodgers now," Frazier said. "I think the Dodgers have taken on what the Yankees were in the past. And I think that the Dodgers get really efficient players for how much they're spending. Now, obviously, they're going to go out and they're just going to empty the bank for these dudes, and they're going to make sure they're buying the best talent.
"I mean, we just saw that Edwin Díaz signed there, and that was a player that I feel like the Yankees -- you can't let -- you just can't let certain players go back to organizations that are having so much success. You have to block them. You have to be a speed bump in the road a little bit. Take some of the guys that they want, because they're taking everybody and they're just stacking rings on top of each other right now."
Clint Frazier not happy with Yankees setup around big players
Clint Frazier acknowledged that the Yankees do spend well as suggested by the payroll of the past few years. He also mentioned that there are some really high quality players but the talent they surround them with is not producing results.
"I just don't feel like they add talent that's really difference-makers all the time," Frazier added. "Obviously up and down that roster they've got significant players -- superstars, some would call them -- and franchise-changing players are on the Yankees' roster. So you can't knock them for the ones they have, but you can knock them for the guys that they kind of deploy around these superstars."
Overall, Frazier asks the Yankees to not let Dodgers move away with championships easily. They are in the early phase of their dynasty and the Yankees are one of the teams that can really challenge them head on in terms of almost everything. However, for that to happen, the Yankees need to make offseason decision and spend fluidly so they don't miss out on any big players.
