The New York Mets are reportedly signing former New York Yankees closer Luke Weaver on a two-year, $22 million deal to strengthen their bullpen after Edwin Diaz signed for the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency.
The Mets, who failed to retain three-time All-Star Diaz this offseason, are signing a second former Yankees reliever as they have also signed Devin Williams, who played for the Bronx Bombers in 2025.
Fans reacted to the Mets prizing away Weaver from their crosstown rivals.
"We live in a world where the Yankees are becoming the Mets farm team. It’s glorious 🤣"
"With so many guys coming over from the Bronx, is it the New York Metmees or Yankets?"
"All the Yankees players want to play for the Mets instead i’m weak 😭😭😭"
"LITTLE BROTHERS IN QUEENS KEEP STEALING OUR TOYS LMFAOOOOOO"
"I remember the days the Mets never went after Yankee players, and vice versa."
"They are legitimately never beating the little brother allegations💀"
Weaver spent the last three seasons with the Yankees and is coming off a wobbly year in the Bronx as pitched to a 3.62 ERA in 64 appearances with eight saves in 2025.
Mets sign Luke Weaver after Yankees reportedly didn't pursue former closer in free agency
Luke Weaver is the third former Yankees pitcher in the Mets' pitching staff that also features Devin Williams and Clay Holmes. Last offseason, the Mets prized away Juan Soto from their crosstown rivals on a blockbuster $765 million deal.
According to the New York Post's Joel Sherman, the Yankees didn't show much interest in retaining their former closer as they didn't table an offer for Weaver in free agency.
Weaver will partner up with former Yankees teammate Devin Williams in the Mets bullpen that saw Edwin Diaz, Tyler Rogers and Gregory Soto leave the Queens in free agency.
