Devin Williams had a terrible year with the New York Yankees. The two-time NL Reliever of the Year ended the season with a 4.79 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP over 62 innings, with 18 saves but four blown saves in 22 chances. As a result, he always found himself on the receiving end of trolling from fans.

He became a free agent after the 2025 season and has reportedly signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the New York Mets. Not long after the deal was made official, on Thursday, Williams posted a scorching message on social media, taking a dig at Yankees fans:

“For a bunch of people that didn’t want me back on your team, y’all sure are mad in the DMs.”

Devin Williams, who had a fine stint with the Brewers, where he earned two All-Star selections and the NL Rookie of the Year award, was traded to the Yankees in exchange for Nestor Cortes, Caleb Durbin and cash considerations.

He started the 2025 season as the team's closer, but after multiple blowups, manager Aaron Boone took the job away from him. In one game, he gave up three runs in the ninth inning against the Houston Astros, resulting in a loss.

Williams joins Juan Soto as another player who left the Yankees for the Mets after one year. That doesn't happen generally as far as history is concerned, but this one might not be heartbreaking for the fans in the Bronx.

What's next for Devin Williams and Mets after latest deal?

In Devin Williams, the Mets replaced their long-time closer Edwin Diaz, who became a free agent this offseason. They see him as a key late-inning reliever, and it won't be a surprise if they assign him the role of the closer straight away. However, if the Mets are also able to bring back Diaz, then Williams will still be a key cog in the Mets' late-inning setup.

Meanwhile, with the Mets, Williams will look to put his horrible season with the Yankees behind him. He will instead look at the positives, like a high strikeout rate, good chase/whiff rates, and still a dominant changeup plus fastball mix.
