The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in World Series Game 7 on Saturday to become the first team in 25 years to win back-to-back Fall Classic titles.
The Dodgers were on the brink of being walked off as the Blue Jays had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning with the scores tied at 4-4. However, Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched in relief to replace Blake Snell and escaped the jam to send the game into extra innings.
The Japanese ace kept the Blue Jays scoreless over 2.2 innings to secure a thrilling 5-4 win in the final game of the season. Yamamoto was named the World Series MVP after pitching 17 2/3 innings over three games in the World Series, giving up just two runs (1.20 ERA) on nine hits, with 14 strikeouts.
Yamamoto pitched a complete game in Game 2 of the Fall Classic and also pitched six innings in Game 6 before pitching out of the bullpen in the World Series decider. He posted a 5-1 record in the postseason with a 1.45 ERA over 37 1/3 innings.
