Since signing with the LA Dodgers in January, Hyeseong Kim has gone on to enjoy a dream first season in the big leagues. As the Dodgers won the World Series for the second year running, Kim became the first Korean position player to win a ring in his rookie season.

Soon after the season reached its conclusion, Kim traveled back to his home country to celebrate with his family. Eager to congratulate Hyeseong Kim on his achievement, plenty of fans and journalists received him when he landed at Incheon International Airport.

One of the individuals in the crowd, however, had no interest in cheering for Kim's achievements. The man, known as "Mr. Kim from Gocheok," instead attempted to stage a protest against Hyeseong, urging him to repay a debt of 100 million won ($68,600) which his estranged father allegedly owes him.

Holding a banner that stated his demands, the protester snuck into a news conference. Once he spotted the intruder, Hyeseong Kim was visibly discomforted, and he refrained from continuing with the interview until security intervened.

As it turns out, this was not an isolated incident. The creditor has been stalking Hyeseong ever since he began playing for the Kiwoom Heroes in the KBO, attending games with large banners calling out the youngster and his family, so much so that he is a notorious figure among Korean baseball fans.

Legal action against Hyeseong Kim's stalker has proven an ineffective deterrent

According to Korean law, children are not legally obligated to repay debts incurred by living parents, and hence Hyeseong Kim is not liable to pay his father's creditor. But he has still been harassed repeatedly, leading to his legal team filing multiple defamation suits.

As a result, Hyeseong's stalker has been convicted twice, fined 1 million won in 2019, and 3 million won in 2023. However, this has proven to be an ineffective deterrent, as is evident by the events at Incheon Airport.

Another key issue in the case is that Kim's stalker has been offered slight leniency by Korean courts, considering he allegedly has a legitimate claim against Kim's father.
