The New York Mets is making the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Fans hoped that the franchise will be able to re-sign free agents Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz in the offseason. However, the complete opposite has happened.

Alonso signed with the Baltimore Orioles on a five-year, $155 million deal and Diaz signed with the LA Dodgers on a three-year, $69 million deal. Not only that, the Mets even traded their longtime mainstay Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for infielder Marcus Semien.

In the wake of lackluster offseason, MLB radio host Joe Benigno slammed the Mets front office for overanalyzing the team's postseason failure which according to many was because of their pitching department. He compared the state of the team with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"We dismantled our baseball team, okay? That basically was a ‘fix the pitching staff’ away from being a contender in the National League," Benigno said. "I mean, let’s be honest about it, that’s pretty much it. And I am so disgusted. I am so down. You know how I feel about Stearns, but I’m even more aggravated with the owner because he sold us a bill of goods, bro.

"And this is what gets me more than anything. You know, ‘Uncle Stevie,’ all his money, you know, ‘we’ll never be like this again,’ and on and on and on. And now we’re like that. We’re the Pittsburgh Pirates."

Another MLB insider criticizes Mets front office

Joe Benigno was joined by MLB insider Joe Bowden, highlighting what president of baseball operations David Stearns is doing wrong with the Mets.

“What in the world have you done to that culture?" Bowden said. "I’m just not sure I get what they’re doing. They’re getting older, and they’re replacing an elite closer in Díaz with Devin Williams, who struggled in the first half of last year. We’re replacing Alonso with Polanco.

Bowden referenced Stearns' stay with the Milwaukee Brewers before coming to New York and embracing that same philosophy despite being part of a far different team in terms of financials and fan base.

"What we’re doing is trying to win like we won in Milwaukee. And winning in Milwaukee works in a small market. This is a different job in New York. There are different pressures on players in New York, and you’re going to sit there and try to build a Milwaukee team in New York? I promise you, it’s not going to work.”

Stearns is coming under fire and he needs to make a statement signing. Let's see if the near future changes the perspective.
