Star closer Edwin Diaz made the biggest noise this offseason by signing with the Dodgers on a three-year, $69 million deal. After seven seasons with the Mets, Diaz has made his way to Hollywood to join the back-to-back World Series champions.
News broke on Tuesday about the Puerto Rican's decision to leave Queens after an accolade-laden tenure. With the Dodgers, he will most likely be utilized as the team's number one closer, a luxury that skipper Dave Roberts didn't have last season after several injuries to key bullpen pieces. Upon hearing the news, fans expressed their fears about the Dodgers adding another superstar to the roster.
Edwin Diaz's annual contract could see him get paid by as much as $23 million a year which is projected to be the highest average annual value record for a reliever. Furthermore, it would give him a chance to make showcase his talents deep into the MLB postseason, something that he wasn't able to do with the Mets.
In 2025, Diaz had a bounce back year for the Mets having posted 28 saves in 48 appearances with a 1.63 ERA and 3.0 fWAR. It can be recalled that the Queens-based team tendered a $22.025 million qualifying offer to their star closer. However, Diaz turned this down on the November 18 deadline that made him eligible to be courted by other teams or be offered a new contract by his parent club.
As for the Mets, they've signed Yankees reliever Devin Williams on December 1 as a sort of insurance policy in case a move away by Diaz comes to fruition. Williams signed for the cross-city rivals to a three-year, $51 million contract after spending a highly-publicized lone year with the Yankees.
In the Bronx, Williams was infamously removed as the team's closer after not finding his footing until late in the season. He finished his time there with a 4.79 ERA and 18 saves across 29 games.
Dodgers beat the Blue Jays to the punch for Edwin Diaz
In what looks to be a recurring theme since the race to sign Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers have once again beat the Blue Jays in signing another superstar. This time, star closer Edwin Diaz will head the billing in Hollywood instead of heading north of the border for the AL pennant winners.
Before the move was made official, MLB insiders such as Jon Heyman reported that the Blue Jays could be in the mix in signing Diaz. This was further solidified when The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal shared that Diaz's agents met with Toronto during the meetings.
After a measly 2024 season that was partly due to injury recovery, Edwin Diaz once again proved that he's one of the best closers in the game after being bestowed with his third Reliever of the Year award after a dominant 2025 campaign. With talent all around him and protection on defense, it would be interesting to see how the move pans out for the Puerto Rican star.
