Boston Red Sox pitcher Sonny Gray recently made headlines after being acquired by the team from the St.Louis Cardinals. His scathing comments on the New York Yankees have sparked wild reactions from fans, including comments from Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone. In a recent interview, Boone addressed the ongoing narrative, saying he was “surprised” to hear Gray’s comment on his Yankee tenure. He added that it seems fitting now that the pitcher is with their arch-nemesis.“A little bit. But that's alright. He's in Boston now, he's not supposed to like us anyway. That being said, I really liked Sonny, got along well with him. Spice up the rivalry a little. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I was a little surprised.”On Sunday, during the Winter Meetings, Brian Cashman revealed his conversation with Sonny Gray during the 2018 deadline. In a private room conversation, Gray admitted that he hated New York and didn’t want to be a Yankee.“He said, ‘Hey, can we talk?’. We closed the door and he said, ‘I thought you were going to trade me.' Publicly, I was trying to get pitching and bullpen [help]. Why would I trade a starter when we needed pitching badly?”“That’s when he told me he never wanted to be here -- he hates New York, [that] this is the worst place [and] he just sits in his hotel room. He told me all this stuff and I said: ‘Well, it’s a little late now.’”The Yankees acquired Gray from the Athletics in 2017 after the pitcher showed interest in joining the Bronx. However, during their conversation, he allegedly added that he was pressured to say so by his agent, Bo McKinnis. He was later traded to the Cincinnati Reds in 2019. However, McKinnis challenged Cashman’s narrative and refuted all claims.Sonny Gray’s comment on Yankees after joining Red SoxSonny Gray [Credit: Imagn]Sonny Gray spiced up his move to the Red Sox with sharp comments about his former team, the Yankees. He expressed he was glad to be in a place where he could be himself and openly show his hatred towards the Bronx Bombers.“What did factor into my decision to come to Boston, it feels good to me to go to a place now where, you know what, it’s easy to hate the Yankees, right? It’s easy to go out and have that rivalry and go into it with full force, full steam ahead. I like the challenge.”He added that he felt trapped being with the Yankees, and was happy to be out of NY. The rivalry between the two teams has already started heating up with their first match set for April 21-23 at Fenway Park.
