Earlier in his career, Gray spent two years with the Red Sox's arch-rivals, the New York Yankees. His time in the Bronx did not go to plan, and he was eventually traded to the Cincinnati Reds ahead of the 2019 season.

Featuring on Tuesday's episode of "Hot Stove", the three-time All-Star made his feelings clear about his former team, claiming he was happy to now find himself in a place where it was "easy to hate the Yankees."

"I'll say what did factor into my decision to come to Boston, is it feels good to me to go to a place now where it's easy to hate the Yankees," Gray said. "It's easy to go out and have that rivalry, and go in it with full force. I like the challenge, I appreciate the challenge, I accept the challenge.

"New York just wasn't a good situation for me, wasn't a great setup for me and my family. I never wanted to go there in the first place. Then I was there, and it didn't really work for who I am."

"It's pretty much one of the only things that is continuing to push me, continuing to try to get better in this game, is to get to a World Series, to win a World Series, to pitch in big games,” Gray said. “I love the moment, and I am chasing that moment. Getting to a World Series [and] winning the World Series is at the very top of that list.

“Where I'm at in my career and in my life is I definitely haven't accomplished everything in the game that I want to, and a World Series, and making a deep run in the postseason and winning the World Series is definitely one of those things that I haven't been able to accomplish."
