The New York Yankees are looking to bolster their roster without significantly increasing their payroll. That has landed them in a possible trade scenario for Miami Marlins' starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara.

The Dominican starter returned to the big leagues this year after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He pitched 11-12 with a 5.36 ERA from 31 starts. But Alcantara's fastball remains as potent as it was during the 2022 National League Cy Young-winning season, where he pitched 228.2 innings with a 14-9 record and 2.28 ERA.

The Marlins' starting rotation, consisting of Alcantara and Edward Cabrera as the biggest pieces, has been linked to trades. According to MLB insider Jim Bowden, speaking on the MLB Network Radio on Sunday, the Yankees have a shot at getting Alcantara from the Marlins.

"I think Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins has a legitimate shot at getting traded to the New York Yankees," Bowden said. "I know they've had a lot of discussions.
"I think if the Yankees decided they'd give up Spencer Jones, think of this for a minute, they could sign Kyle Tucker in free agency, and trade Spencer Jones for Alcantara. Now you've added Kyle Tucker and Sandy Alcantara to the team that won 94 games last year, and that would be a game changer for them."

Trading Alcantara with Spencer Jones as the centerpiece will be a justified deal for both sides. Jones has been the top prospect waiting in the wings for New York for the last couple of seasons. If the team signs Tucker and with them having Trent Grisham signed to a qualifying offer to pair alongside Aaron Judge, Jones could find more playing time on a different roster.

MLB insider Jon Heyman feels Miami Marlins are unlikely to let go of Sandy Alcantara

According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, in his column on Wednesday, Marlins' Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera are unlikely to move. Instead, he noted Minnesota Twins' Pablo Lopez and Washington Nationals' MacKenzie Gore having a better chance at being traded by their clubs.

Alcantara is signed to a five-year $56 million contract by the Marlins, with a possible club option for the 2027 season. With two years of club control left, the team could keep the 30-year-old for another season to leverage more from his trade. If the 2026 season turns out to be a bounce-back for him, the returns could be better for Miami.
