Pete Alonso enjoyed a superb 2025 campaign. Impressing on both sides of the ball, Alonso batted .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs, while also being as reliable as ever at first base. He earned his fifth All-Star selection and a Silver Slugger award for his fine performances.

As he entered free agency once the season concluded, the New York Mets were expected to re-sign Alonso. Things did not turn out that way, however, as the infielder eventually agreed to a five-year, $155 million deal to join the Baltimore Orioles.

The Mets have since signed Jorge Polanco to a two-year, $40 million contract. Though Polanco is capable of playing in the infield, he is not a specialized first baseman like Pete Alonso is.

For this reason, sportscaster Ryan Spilborghs has his doubts regarding Polanco's fit for the role.

"I love the player in (Jorge) Polanco," Spilborghs said. "He was DHing and he was playing some second base for the Mariners. For an overall different position, this one doesn't quite make a ton of sense. Not saying he can't play first base, but we're talking about a nuanced position. I don't know. I don't like it when you sign somebody to a pretty big contract in a new city, with a new team, to play a new position. That's a little bit risky.

"There's a lot to it. The guys that are really good there (first base) are really good for a reason. There's footwork, there's timing, there's the stretch. There's just a lot. I thought the clear first base option for the Mets was going to be Mark Vientos. If he (Polanco) is strictly a DH, I'm totally okay with his hitting ability, especially as a switch-hitter. But the first base stuff just caught me off guard, I don't know if I love that."

"There's a lot of offseason left," - Mets owner reassures fans despite failing to retain Pete Alonso

Soon after Pete Alonso finalized his move to the Baltimore Orioles, disappointed fans called out Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns and owner Steve Cohen.

Responding to the criticism, Cohen offered some reassurance when speaking to insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post on Wednesday.

"I totally understand the fans’ reaction,” Cohen said. “There is lots of offseason left to put a playoff team on the field.”

Having shockingly missed out on the playoffs in 2025, fans will be hoping Steve Cohen comes good on his promise.
