While most of the New York Yankees' rumored attention is on free agent outfielders Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker, one former player has urged the franchise to go after two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.

Skubal is currently under team control with the Detroit Tigers and will become a free agent in 2026. If the Tigers are unable to sign him to an extension, they are expected to put him on the trade market and get future assets. If that happens, the $8.2 billion Yankees team (via Forbes) should consider adding him via trade.

Former Yankees outfielder Cameron Maybin suggested that adding Skubal to the lineup will give the team more edge than the signing of either Tucker or Bellinger will do. Maybin broke down why adding Skubal should be a priority.

"Tucker and Bellinger will shake up somebody's offseason, but the move that would take over the entire league is the Yankees going to get Skubal," Maybin wrote. "Tigers clearly don't want to pay him or they would have already.... I'm sure they're trying to justify or convince themselves how's it's probably not smart to pay Skubal what he deserves.... But imagine pairing him with a healthy Sandy Alcantara in the Bronx along with Fried, Cole, Rodon.

"That is a playoff nightmare for every lineup in baseball. And I don't want to hear anything about payroll. This is the Yankees. If you want to win you find a way to make it happen!"

Skubal is a proven winner, and he just showed the second straight year how great he is as a pitcher. Most importantly, he did well in the postseason, too, making him an asset that the Yankees might need to go after.

Why Tarik Skubal to Yankees feel far-fetched?

With outfielder Trent Grisham signing a one-year, $22.025 million qualifying offer, the Yankees' 2026 payroll is already at $281 million. The team is aiming to keep it under $300 million for this season; however, general manager Brian Cashman said it's not a hard cap.

But still, with the Yankees looking to add outfielder Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker, justifying a trade for Tarik Skubal without knowing if he'll stay with them beyond 2026 is difficult.

As such, it doesn't appear that the Yankees will be willing to part ways with a lot of their prospects just to have Skubal for one season, essentially.
