Fans came down heavy on New York Mets general manager David Stearns following his comments on free agent first baseman Pete Alonso at the winter meetings. Most MLB executives are in Orlando, Florida, attending the annual event scheduled from Sunday through Wednesday.

A reporter asked Stearns if he was looking forward to meeting Alonso in Orlando.

"I did see Pete was coming," Stearns said. "I think Pete knows us really well. I think we know Pete really well. I think he'll take the time here to perhaps meet with organizations he doesn't know quite as well and I'm sure we'll be in touch."

Stearns' words regarding Alonso have many fans uneasy, as they shared their thoughts on his remarks.

"Pete deserves better," one fan wrote.
"This guy has the most punchable face in MLB," another fan added.
"This is ridiculous," another fan commented. "Pete reportedly wants 7, Stearns offered 3. Meet in the middle at 5 - bring the AAV up and just bring back the most important homegrown Met since David Wright. Tired of these small market antics."

"This is Stearns telling Pete 'You know where we stand and you know how far we’re willing to go. Take it or leave it. We’re done negotiating,'" another fan added.
"Stearns would’ve been the perfect GM for the Wilpon era Mets 😂" one fan reacted.
"Look up 'Smug' in the dictionary, that’s the face you’ll find," one fan commented.

Pete Alonso and Mets once again remain far apart

Pete Alonso signed a two-year deal with the Mets before the 2025 season started, which looked like a compromise as he asked for an opt-out after the first year. The plan was to get signed long term and prove it in 2025 that he's worthy of a big contract.

Alonso held his end of the bargain, hitting .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs, 126 RBIs, and earned a Silver Slugger Award. Even though the Mets couldn't make the postseason despite having the second-highest payroll, Alonso was not to blame. Thus, entering the offseason, it appeared that it was just a formality for the Mets to act on what was expected.

However, Stearns is once again playing hardball. Rather than give him the deal straight away, he's evaluating Alonso's free agency before giving in.

It remains to be seen if there is a deal on the horizon or if we have seen the last of Polar Bear in a Mets jersey.
