New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner offered his blunt opinion on the Los Angeles Dodgers' World Series roster in the wake of news of $300 million payroll limitation for the 2026 season. The team from LA won back-to-back World Series and comprises the biggest names in baseball, including Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. On the other hand, the Yankees were eliminated in the 2025 ALDS at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays. Last year, they were defeated by the Dodgers in the 2024 World Series. On Monday, in an interview, when asked if he would make changes to his approach to spending, while seeing the Dodgers prevail with their big money, Steinbrenner said:"Yeah, look, if there's a correlation between spending the most money and winning a championship, I still think it's a weak correlation. The sample size of data isn't very big, but they earned every bit of it."He praised the Dodgers' roster and shared the reason behind their back-to-back titles. Steinbrenner believes that if the players play to their potential like the Dodgers did, a World Series is not far away."They struggled with injuries throughout the season, which I mentioned in that same quote, but they got healthy at the right time," Steinbrenner said. "The rotation got healthy, and when that rotation is healthy, they're tough to beat. And they, quite frankly, played up to their potential. I mean, they really played up to their potential -- especially in those last two games -- and that has to happen."Your players have to play up to their potential when you're playing a team as good as the Blue Jays and you're playing under that kind of pressure in the World Series. So, you know, hats off to them. It's not easy to do it twice, and they did it in dramatic fashion this time. But again, we'll see what they do next year and we'll see how it pans out."Finally, Steinbrenner said that the Yankees and the Mets' payrolls were similar for the 2025 season. Still, neither team went as far as they would have liked."You know, there was nothing low about my payroll and the Mets' payroll, and look where we ended up," Steinbrenner said.Overall, Steinbrenner made his point that spending more doesn't land a championship, as he said if the players play to their full potential, that's what is most responsible for the wins.Yankees and Mets both faced premature exitsBoth New York sides entered the 2025 season with massive expectations. They even went toe-to-toe during Juan Soto's free agency before the Mets prevailed with their 15-year, $765 million deal.According to Spotrac, the Mets were second behind the Dodgers with $342.3 million payroll while the Yankees were fourth behind the Philadelphia Phillies with $304 million payroll.Despite that, the Mets couldn't even make the postseason while the Yankees went down against the Blue Jays in just four ALDS games. It remains to be seen if the Yankees change their spending habits in the wake of Dodgers back to back titles.
