The New York Mets received an update on Monday in their chase to re-sign reliever Edwin Diaz this offseason. After the 2025 season, Diaz has opted out of the final two years, $38 million of his contract with the Mets, thereby making him a free agent.Diaz said that he would like to return to the Queens if the Mets come calling with the strongest offer among all teams."I like the [Mets] organization," Diaz said. "You know, if they came with the best deal for me, I’d enjoy to stay with them, but at the end of the day, I don’t know what they’re thinking.”While the Mets are interested in re-signing him, they don't hold any sway over him, as indicated by his statement. This became a reason for fans to react, saying the Mets will get no special discount in their chase for the reliever."In other words, NO hometown discount. I don't blame him. He's certainly knows Cohen is willing to spend," one fan wrote."Sounds whiny," another added."The liking the Mets organization part is unrelatable to most fans I suspect," one fan added."Diaz has earned what he deserves to get paid he has been consistent and reliable. Don’t lose one of the best closers the Mets have ever had and just won reliever of the year by the way deserve to get paid now get it done uncle Stevie," one fan wants the Mets to close Diaz ASAP."As the Dominican journalist Yancen Pujols says: Businesses neither thank nor hold grudges. Edwin will do what's best for him, and the team will do what they consider is the best for the group. Nothing personal," one fan commented."Why would we tell you “Mr. opt Out” what we’re thinking?" one fan asked.Edwin Diaz reveals probablity of re-signing with MetsEdwin Diaz had a strong season in 2025, prompting his decision to opt out in the first place.
