The Texas Rangers are rumored to trade Corey Seager as they aim to reduce their payroll for the 2026 season. Over the weekend, they traded Marcus Semien to the New York Mets in exchange for Brandon Nimmo.

However, the deal doesn't appear to benefit the Rangers that much financially. While parting away with Semien's three-year, $72 million remaining contract, they added Nimmo's $101.25 million total salary to their books through 2030. That's about $20 million per year salary. Semien was carrying a $24 million annual cap hit.

As such, MLB insider Ryan Garcia rightly pointed out that this move doesn't really give the Rangers an edge in their efforts to reduce payroll. He said that's not the kind of deal a club makes while considering to trade Seager, who is signed to a 10-year, $325 million deal.

"Not saying this as a sourced thing it's just a guess, but trading Marcus Semien for Brandon Nimmo isn't the kind of thing you do when you're getting ready to trade Corey Seager," he wrote.

Rangers' payroll reduction resulting in Corey Seager's trade rumors

While the Rangers are looking to reduce their payroll, they have not confirmed Corey Seager's trade rumors. In fact, those rumors are starting in first place to help the Rangers reduce their salary cap, since the shortstop is carrying a large contract.

Seager has six years remaining and approximately $189 million on the deal. If the Rangers are indeed looking to part ways with their 2023 World Series MVP, there will be plenty of suitors.

The New York Yankees are repeatedly named in trade rumours for Seager as they are looking for a shortstop this offseason. Moreover, Seager doesn't have Yankees mentioned on his no-trade list.

Other teams like the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers might also want to get in on Seager's trade market.

Most importantly, Seager doesn't have a no-trade clause, but he does have an eight-team no-trade list included in his contract. Among those teams, the Braves are reportedly one of them.

It remains to be seen whether this Seager rumor has any weight to it.
