MLB insider brutally questions Red Sox going for J.T. Realmuto in free agency

Catcher J.T. Realmuto is a free agent and completed seven years with the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Boston Red Sox are reportedly eyeing him for next season. But MLB insider Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report criticized the notion on Tuesday.

"Why? Just ... why?"
“The Red Sox have plenty of needs this offseason," Miller said (per Newsweek). "First base and third base are big ones for sure. Arguably second base, too. Middle relief would be nice. One more back-of-the-rotation starter certainly wouldn't hurt. What they don't need, though, is another catcher.”

The insider pointed out that Connor Wong and Carlos Narváez are already part of the team and together cost $2 million for the catcher position in 2026. Wong and Narváez are both under team control through 2028.

"After increasing payroll considerably with the acquisition of Sonny Gray, can they honestly justify disregarding at least one of their actual needs to instead sign Realmuto to what would be an eight-figure salary as the third catcher on the roster?"

Meanwhile, Realmuto, who turns 35 in March, hasn't been an All-Star since 2021. When he was in his prime, he signed a $115.5 million, five-year deal with Philadelphia

On Nov. 16, the Burger Foundation organized a softball game at First Horizon Park in Nashville. J.T. Realmuto played in the Lucky Classic game to raise awareness about Down syndrome. Texas Rangers first baseman Jake Burger’s daughter, Penelope, was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

In 2025, JT Realmuto posted a decent performance behind the plate; in 1,151⅓ innings, he leads 132 games as catcher in total 134 games. The Phillies catcher also performed with a solid batting average of .257, 12 homers and 53 RBIs.
