The New York Mets are actively pursuing a power hitter to partner with All-Star sluggers Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor in the starting lineup.

While Steve Coen's team is heavily linked with a return for their former slugger Pete Alonso, the Mets are also reportedly pursuing veteran designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who is coming off a career year with the Philadelphia Phillies.

In the latest MLB Tonight episode, host Greg Amsinger shared the potential best fits for Kyle Schwarber. The MLB host named the Mets as the second-best fit for Schwarber. However, Amsinger claimed that Schwarber's arrival in New York could close the door for Alonso's Mets return.

Amsinger's co-host and MLB analyst Yonder Alonso echoed the sentiment, saying Schwarber could have the same production from the plate and would be a lot cheaper.

"This makes sense," Alonso said. "He is a lot cheaper than Pete Alonso. You are gonna get 50 home runs and a 130 sticks, same thing as Pete Alonso."

While ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Mets are "in the mix" for Schwarber, the Phillies remain the favorites to re-sign the All-Star slugger after his historic 2025 season.

Pete Alonso expected to hold out for long-term contract amid rumors of Mets return

Jeff Passan reported that while the Mets are pursuing Pete Alonso, they will face tougher competition for his signature this offseason as the All-Star first baseman had a strong 2025 season.

Alonso, who had to settle for a shorter deal in free agency last offseason, opted out of his deal after registering 38 home runs and 126 RBIs for the Mets in the 2025 season. The Boston Red Sox and the Cincinnati Reds are among the teams interested in signing the All-Star slugger.

It'll be interesting to see if Steve Cohen concedes to Alonso's contract demands or look at other potential options.
