Having shockingly missed out on the playoffs in 2025, the New York Mets' offseason has not gone how fans would have hoped. The two-time World Series champions saw a significant amount of talent and clubhouse presence depart in recent weeks, as Brandon Nimmo was traded to the Texas Rangers before free agents Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso signed with the LA Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles respectively. On Wednesday's episode of "Honda Sportsnite," legendary first baseman Keith Hernandez reacted to the team's winter."You've really let go three of your most popular players, in a team that had a very disappointing season," Hernandez said. "They'd been together a very long time, so it's obvious that they are going in a new direction. The direction is going to be (shoring up the) defense and also pitching."...I've been watching the interviews. Everybody's kinda speechless. I'm a little bit speechless. This is very explosive. In the years that I've been with the Mets, I have not seen this kind of moving in a new direction, I guess. It is profound.""There's a lot of offseason left" - Mets owner urges fans to remain optimistic despite failing to retain important playersWhile fans were anticipating a big offseason after a disappointing campaign, things have appeared to go in the opposite direction for the New York Mets. As Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonso, two of the best in the majors in their roles, signed elsewhere, fans called out president of baseball operations David Stearns and owner Steve Cohen.Responding to the backlash, Cohen spoke to insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post on Wednesday, calling for fans to remain optimistic."I totally understand the fans’ reaction,” Cohen said. “There is lots of offseason left to put a playoff team on the field.”SNY Mets @SNY_MetsLINKSteve Cohen comments to @JonHeyman on the Mets' offseason so far and the fans' reaction to the Mets losing Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Díaz and Pete Alonso: “I totally understand the fans’ reaction. There is lots of offseason left to put a playoff team on the field.”Though recent weeks might not inspire much confidence, the Mets are still linked with several top free agents such as Cody Bellinger, Alex Bregman, Framber Valdez and Robert Suarez. Fans can perhaps find a sliver lining in the possibility that letting both Diaz and Alonso walk may mean one or more big acquisitions are in the works.
