NY radio legend Joe Benigno shared his displeasure with the New York Mets' conduct in the offseason over the franchise's history. The Mets have two of their iconic players in free agency this offseason. They are Pete Alonso, who had a "monster year," and Edwin Diaz, who has been a "premium closer" for a while now.

While discussing with MLB insider Jon Heyman on The Show, Benigno shared his feelings on what the Mets should do this offseason, starting with re-signing both Diaz and Alonso.

"There's only two things that matter to me in this offseason as a Mets fan," Benigno said. "I want Alonso and Edwin Diaz signed. Whatever you do after that, obviously, we need starting pitching, there's no question, that's got to be addressed. You could trade anybody not named Lindor, Soto, and McClain."

Benigno, who has been a Mets fan since the age of nine, has seen the franchise give up on their iconic players almost all the time. He has become fed up with this, and he now wants to see a change in how the front office approaches the offseason.

"I have seen this franchise get rid of, basically, with the exception of David Wright, every iconic player we've ever had," Benigno said.

The childhood Mets fan cited history on how the Mets have let go of their iconic players every chance they got.

"They traded Tom Seaver for basically four stiffs, what a disaster that was," Benigno said. "And I'm not even going to get into the Nolan Ryan trade, but everything after that, starting with the Seaver trade, you had that ahole Frank Cashin, who destroyed the championship team, saying Darryl Strawberry wasn't, at the time, a $5 million-a-year ballplayer. They let him walk away to the Dodgers, what a disaster. I could go on and on. That's my feeling."

NY radio legend goes at-bat for Pete Alonso deserving to get re-signed by Mets

The Mets and Pete Alonso once again find themselves at the same junction after just one year. Last year's negotiation didn't result in anything before a compromised two-year deal was struck with an opt-out in place. Now that, Alonso has exercised that opt-out again to become a free agent, it's time for the Mets to pay the piper or move elsewhere.

Alonso is a cherished personality among the Mets fanbase. He wants a long-term contract from the Mets, and the NY radio legend Joe Benigno shares why he deserves it.

"I want Pete," Benigno said. "He's an all-time Met, he's a homegrown Met, he's our all-time home run leader in the history of the franchise. I want to see this guy play his whole career here. I don't know if he’ll hit 500 homers, but certainly over 400 and something home runs, and number 20 will eventually go up into the rafters."

It remains to be seen if the Mets finally award Alonso with a contract he has been seeking since last offseason.
