Williams became a free agent after an indifferent stint with the New York Yankees in 2025 after being traded by the Milwaukee Brewers last December. Following his signing with the Mets, Williams expressed his excitement about being part of a team "that wants to win."
"They're a team that wants to win. Steve's doing all he can put a winning product on the field. I'd love to be a part of that."

"Ah yes the ole go to a team that just missed the playoffs who supposedly is a winning product good luck Devin."
Williams, who didn't have the best year in 2025, is 31-16 with a 2.45 ERA and 86 saves in 308 games over seven seasons.
