Following the second-half meltdown of the New York Mets in the 2025 season, the team is in serious contention to do a complete makeover. They started off the offseason on a strong note by trading Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers.

The veteran outfielder was one of the core pieces of the team’s lineup, which also included Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, and Francisco Lindor. With his trade, the spotlight now goes to Alonso and closer Edwin Diaz, two key players on the roster.

Diaz, who opted out of the last two years of his 5-year $102 million deal, hopes to re-sign a similar deal to that of 2022, per Will Sammon. However, the Mets are looking for short-term contracts with a focus now on Devin Williams and Robert Suarez.

Per Sammon, these two pitchers are at the top of the Mets' wish list in case negotiations with Diaz don’t end well. They have reportedly spoken to Williams and Suarez’s camp several times as their potential plan B.

Two teams that have emerged as strong competitors for Edwin Diaz are the World Series rivals - the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays. Both have reached out to Diaz’s camp with their respective offers, but no official step has been taken.

On the other hand, if the Mets go all out for Devin Williams, they might find themselves competing with the Dodgers, who are reported to be targeting him as well. Williams struggled with the New York Yankees the past season, recording a 4.79 ERA with a WHIP of 1.13.

Earlier, Robert Suarez opted out of his final two-year contract of $16 million with the Padres. While age might limit his chances and desired contract amount in free agency, his stuff might lure high-end teams in the market.

The Game 7 World Series loss will haunt the Blue Jays for quite a while, and they are doing everything they can to make sure to win the crown in 2026. One of their targets in free agency clashes with the Dodgers.

After Jeff Hoffman’s disappointing end in the season, the Jays will be looking forward to adding some raw talent in the lineup. Meanwhile, LA’s addition of Edwin Diaz will fill in the spots where Tanner Scott underperformed.

Diaz’s addition would improve their overall bullpen quality. In 2025, Diaz recorded 98 strikeouts, a 1.63 ERA, and a 0.87 WHIP in 62 appearances.
